I Don't See Value - Do You?

This chart makes the claim that stocks are a compelling value at this level. Yes some are. However, they seem reasonably priced from where I sit. They get really cheap the closer they get to the bottom green line. We are not even close. (damon)

Source: http://www.chartoftheday.com/

Today's chart illustrates how the recent rise in earnings has impacted the current valuation of the stock market as measured by the price to earnings ratio (PE ratio). Generally speaking, when the PE ratio is high, stocks are considered to be expensive. When the PE ratio is low, stocks are considered to be inexpensive. From 1900 into the mid-1990s, the PE ratio tended to peak in the low to mid-20s (red line) and trough somewhere around seven (green line). The price investors were willing to pay for a dollar of earnings increased during the dot-com boom (late 1990s), surged even higher during the dot-com bust (early 2000s), and spiked to extraordinary levels during the financial crisis (late 2000s). As a result of the recent surge in corporate earnings, the PE ratio has dropped to a level that has rarely existed over the past two decades.

Where Are The Jobs?

Today, the Labor Department reported that nonfarm payrolls (jobs) increased in April for an eighth consecutive monthly gain. Today's chart provides some perspective on the US job market. Note how the number of jobs steadily increased from 1961 to 2001 (top chart). During the last economic recovery (i.e. the end of 2001 to the end of 2007), job growth was unable to get back up to its long-term trend (first time since 1961). More recently, nonfarm payrolls have pulled away from its 40-year trend (1961-2001) by a record percentage (bottom chart). In fact, the current number of US jobs was first reached in early 2000. Very Sobering....(Damon)

Chart of the Day

Source: http://www.chartoftheday.com/

For some long-term perspective, today's chart illustrates the Dow adjusted for inflation since 1900. Of interest is that the inflation-adjusted Dow has traded within the confines of an extremely long-term upward sloping trend channel over the past 111 years. It is also of interest that the secular bear market that concluded in the early 1980s was almost as severe as the one that concluded in the early 1930s. Also, while the market action from the inflation-adjusted record high of 1999 to the financial crisis lows of 2009 was severe, the magnitude of this decline was much less than what occurred with the bear markets that concluded in the early 1930s and early 1980s. More recently, the Dow has retraced 74% of the financial crisis bear market with the inflation-adjusted Dow currently trading 19% off its 1999 record high -- a rather dramatic turnaround considering the magnitude of the recent financial crisis.

Chart of the Day

Source: http://www.chartoftheday.com/

Today's chart illustrates how the stock market has performed during the average pre-election year. Since 1900, the stock market has tended to perform well during the first seven to eight months of the average pre-election year. For the remainder of the year, pre-election performance has tended to be more flat/choppy. This pre-election year has followed the path of the average pre-election year rather closely with a rally up until mid-February and a correction into mid-March with the aftermath of the devastating Japanese earthquake and tsunami weighing heavily on the market over the past few days.

We Couldn't Agree More

"The Investment Answer" is broken down into five main principles:

1. Hire a fee-only, independent financial advisor, not a broker who is compensated for selling you company products. This is an issue both Goldie and Murray felt strongly about. "[Murray] didn't care for the retail side of Wall Street; he felt that was the side of Wall Street that was really hurting people," Goldie says. "This book was his attempt to try to educate people and help level the playing field."

2. Diversify among stocks and bonds, buying both large and small caps and value and growth.

3. Divide foreign and domestic investments.

4. Decide if you want to own passive or actively managed mutual funds. Goldie and Murray both encourage passive investing. "Over time a passive strategy on average will outperform an active strategy," says Goldie. This concept was hard, even for Goldie, to understand at first. "I was brought up under the idea that if you worked harder and you were smarter and better, you would perform better. But it doesn't hold with investing."

5. Rebalance your portfolio.

Don't Look now, but...

.....Gold and Emerging Markets Stocks are being left behind in the market's latest advance.  Quite interesting because if all one ever did was listen to the news and other financial pundits then you would surely think that Gold(inflation trade) and Emerging Markets (commodity trade) would be making new highs.  They Are Not.  Good Ol' Fashion U.S stocks are leading the market higher.  Why? Could be a number of reasons: stronger u.s economic data, stronger dollar, deadlock in washington.  Investors shouldn't focus on the reason why.  They should focus on the price action right in front of them.  We track 12 commonly defined indices and monitor them on a daily basis.  4 of our top 5 holdings are U.S. Domestic.  The 5th fund is International Small Cap.  Damon............
